I’m starting rehearsals for a new project in the city! I’ll be taking public transport, so I wanted to give my bag a refresh so I’m ready to go!
What I’ve got in my bag:
My script, of course! I also like to have a spare binder or folder, plus some paper.
Pencil case filled with different colored highlighters, pens, a pencil, and sticky notes. I like to have multiple options for highlights: if I’m playing multiple roles, I will highlight each in a different color. If I’m working on a show with a lot of stage directions, I’ll highlight my key stage directions in a different color. I use stickies to tab each of my scenes (and maybe even different colors for different characters). Stickies are also great if you’re given a libretto that you’re not allowed to leave marks in - instead of erasing your pencil at the end of the run, just take notes on stickies so you can easily remove them!
Basic makeup: concealer, mascara, and lip color. There might be surprise photos at the rehearsal and I may need a touch up!
An extra hair tie, just in case!
Water: I am in love with my Brita water bottle. It has a filter in it, so I can fill it up anywhere! The stainless steel keeps my water cold.
Singer’s Spray and Vocal Zone drops are rescue tools if I’m feeling particularly dry or full of phlegm.
Rehearsal “Costume”: depending on the show, I may need certain clothing items. Obviously dance shoes, but even when it’s not a musical I like to practice in the shoes I’m actually going to be wearing for the show. For example, a spare pair of heels if I know my character wears heels. If it’s a period piece, I also bring a rehearsal skirt: this is basically a long skirt that I put over my clothes in rehearsal so I can get used to the feeling of a long skirt (if my costume is ultimately a dress etc.)
Am I forgetting anything? What extras do you like to keep in your bag?
As an Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. This comes at no extra cost to you. Items linked are ideas - you may find something else you prefer elsewhere! I’m also all for sustainability and using something you already own, or thrifting!
